Bone Regeneration

If you have experienced gum disease and have suffered some bone loss as a result, bone regeneration is a worthwhile option to restore both the fundamental health and natural function of your smile. Bone regeneration is a surgical procedure that will regrow and restore your jawbone and tissue, to restore any damage caused by the periodontal disease.

A bone regeneration procedure can also be performed to protect your natural teeth and all the soft tissues that are crucial in keeping them in place, so you can continue to experience and enjoy an improved quality of life as a result of your improved overall health, function, and appearance.

Bone regeneration treatment may also help if you are missing teeth or if you are not a candidate for dental implants because of bone loss. Dental implants require a certain amount of jawbone density prior to placement to achieve successful results. Bone regeneration will help if you have a deteriorated or atrophied jawbone, so it can support your new restorations or prepare for a dental implant procedure.

Beginning with your very first visit with Periodontal and Implants Associates, Inc., our entire dental team is committed to establishing a relationship with you, acknowledging your unique individual needs, and striving effortlessly to provide personalized oral health care to meet your goals.

We focus on creating the ultimate stress-free and comfortable dental experience. Your health and comfort are our top priorities, and we will do what is necessary to help you understand your symptoms and your treatment options in a relaxed environment. Call Periodontal and Implant Associates, Inc. at (256) 734-8588 with any questions or to make an appointment for a bone regeneration evaluation.

In recent decades, surgical tooth extractions were performed and not followed up with a bone graft to both preserve the size and shape of the jawbone mass, which will immediately shrink when not stimulated by a tooth’s natural root. When your jawbone atrophies and loses integrity, a dental implant cannot be successfully placed until the jawbone mass is surgically restored.

Now these procedures have improved. It is now possible for Periodontal and Implant Associates to perform tooth removal surgery while at the same time protecting your jawbone from shrinking, as well as regenerating any jawbone tissue loss from previous tooth extractions, all through a procedure known as bone regeneration.

The Benefits of Bone Regeneration

The bone and gum tissue always fit together snugly around each tooth. When coping with periodontal disease, both the supporting tissue and bone are compromised, and pockets will immediately develop around the teeth. If too much of the bone is lost, the tooth will need to be extracted over time.

Bone regeneration will allow your body to naturally regenerate any lost bone. By repairing and restoring the damage from the gum disease, this procedure will improve your chances of maintaining your natural teeth and reduce the possibility of any future health problems associated with the periodontal disease.

The Bone Regeneration Procedure

The task of simultaneously extracting a tooth and then performing a bone grafting procedure is called socket preservation. This simple procedure prevents jawbone atrophy from ever beginning. First, the removal of the damaged tooth will be conducted in a conservative fashion to promote quicker healing. To make sure of this, Periodontal and Implant Associates, Inc. will use microsurgical techniques when extracting the affected tooth.

The empty tooth socket is then immediately grafted with a combination of bone grafting materials. Once placed into the socket, the surgical site is covered with a collagen barrier. This collagen barrier contains the graft and will separate it from any adjacent gum tissue. The adjoining gum tissue is carefully advanced, which reduces the risk of exposing the gum graft.

During your bone regeneration procedure, the team at Periodontal and Implant Associates, Inc., places a biocompatible membrane between the gum and the bone, which now acts as a protective barrier. This barrier will prevent the downgrowth of any gum tissue into the underlying bone as it heals.

In some situations, additional bone graft or tissue-stimulating proteins may be added under the membrane to both stimulate and encourage your body’s natural ability to regenerate the bone and tissue. This membrane around the grafting is designed to either dissolve away or reabsorb after a few short weeks.

There are a few options that will enhance the support for your teeth and restore your bone to a healthy density. At your personal treatment plan appointment, your team at Periodontal and Implant Associates, Inc. will review the options with you that will restore and maintain your periodontal health.

Aftercare Following a Bone Regeneration Procedure

The bone regeneration procedure usually takes between 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. Because your team at Periodontal and Implant Associates, Inc. uses microsurgery techniques for this procedure, there is usually no swelling or discomfort. Most of our patients share that one inconvenient side effect is not being able to chew on the surgical site for several weeks after the procedure, and waiting for around four months after the procedure for the surgical placement of the dental implant.

Bone Regeneration Treatment Costs

The cost of your bone regeneration treatment will vary based on your individual needs and your specific treatment plan. We will review with you the cost of your procedure, your insurance coverage, and the available payment options before we begin, so that we can make the best choice together for your situation.
