Implant Supported Dentures

Unlike standard traditional dentures, which simply rest on your gums and are held in place with a dental adhesive, implanted supported dentures are supported and secured in place with tiny titanium implant posts, which the denture tray snaps onto for stability. Implant supported dentures can be easily custom-designed for you if you are frustrated with the common issues associated with conventional dentures, like shifting and slipping, restricted diets, and annoying discomfort.

Beginning with your very first visit with Periodontal and Implants Associates, Inc., our entire dental team is committed to establishing a relationship with you, acknowledging your unique individual needs, and striving effortlessly to provide personalized oral health care to meet your goals.

We focus on creating the ultimate stress-free and comfortable dental experience. Your health and comfort are our top priorities, and we will do what is necessary to help you understand your symptoms and your treatment options in a relaxed environment. Call Periodontal and Implant Associates, Inc. at (256) 734-8588 with any questions or to make an appointment to discuss implant supported dentures for you.

How Do Implant Supported Dentures Actually Work?

An implant supported denture has specially designed clips on the underside that snap onto attachments placed on the implant post extensions. Implant supported dentures are often now suggested for the lower jaw since traditional dentures are less stable on the lower arch. Usually, a conventional denture made to fit an upper jaw can be secure and does not necessarily need the extra stability provided by the implants. Periodontal and Implant Associates, Inc. will evaluate your circumstances and determine whether an implant-supported denture is beneficial for you in either your upper or lower jaw.

We offer two types of implant supported dentures: one that is ball-retained and the other that is bar-retained. With either framework, the final denture will be a custom-designed acrylic tray that will look like your gums. Porcelain or acrylic artificial crowns matching your natural teeth are attached to this base. Both versions need at least two implants for the necessary support.

Are You a Candidate for
Implant Supported Dentures?

Your team at Periodontal and Implant Associates, Inc. has learned that implant supported dentures can very well be an appropriate solution for many patients. There are no age restrictions if you want to have this procedure performed. Implant supported dentures might not be appropriate if you have insufficient jawbone density. If you do not have enough jawbone mass, we can discuss whether a simple bone graft is a possibility for you to restore this crucial element.

The Implant Supported Denture Procedure

The process of having an implant supported denture restoration will take some patience on your part. We will begin with your initial evaluation, where Periodontal and Implant Associates, Inc. will review your entire medical and dental history, perform a complete oral examination, capture X-rays, and necessary scans to determine if implant supported dentures are indeed the right solution for you.

Once this approach has been agreed upon, we then perform a complete examination of your jawbone to make sure that the bone has the structural integrity to successfully support an implant. If you are a viable candidate after this extensive exam, the precise locations are determined for the implants, and the next step will be administering a local anesthetic to numb the immediate soft tissue prior to surgically placing the titanium posts into your jawbone. Titanium is used since it naturally integrates with the bone.

After the placement of the implants, you need several months to allow the titanium posts to integrate, fuse, or bond with your jawbone. During this healing period, Periodontal and Implant Associates, Inc. will provide a temporary set of dentures, which will be customized for you. When we have decided the posts are securely integrated, we add abutments or extensions to the posts. Finally, after allowing your gums to heal for two weeks, we can place your permanent implant supported dentures that have been custom-designed and fabricated in a dental lab.

Proper Care for You Implant Supported Dentures

No different than your natural teeth, it is crucial that you maintain good daily cleaning habits. It is essential that you consistently clean the appliance, scrub around your gums, artificial teeth, and the attachments. In addition to practicing consistent good self-care at home, it is also important that you complement your efforts by scheduling regular preventative appointments every six months. At these routine checkups, Periodontal and Implant Associates, Inc. will add to your efforts by conducting professional cleanings and monitoring the state of your oral health, catching any issues early. We will check your implants and take X-rays when necessary to make sure that your dentures, attachments, and implants are still positioned properly.
