Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is the inclusion of medication to encourage you to relax during your dental procedure. It can sometimes be called sleep dentistry, although that is not accurate. You will be awake with most sedations except for being under general anesthesia.

The various levels of sedation dentistry are:

Minimal Sedation teeth

You are awake and relaxed with no anxiety.

Moderate Sedation

You may slur your words when speaking and not be able to remember details of the procedure.

Deep Sedation

You are lingering on the edge of consciousness, but can still be awakened.

General Anesthesia

You are completely unconscious.

Undergoing an involved dental treatment such as a root canal, an extraction, or oral surgery may be stressful. With the introduction of sedation dentistry, when your treatment is finished, you might have no idea of the amount of time it took, any startling noises, or any discomfort you were expecting. Periodontal and Implant Associates, Inc. is pleased to offer the option of safe, comfortable, and effective sedation dentistry. You will benefit from sedation dentistry if you have:

  • Fear or anxiety of being at the dental office.
  • A challenging time sitting still and quiet for an extended period of time.
  • A challenging time both getting and staying numb from conventional dental anesthesia.

  • No detailed memory of undergoing the procedure.
  • Will also reduce your gag reflex.
  • Make the procedure quicker and easier for everyone.

The Different Dental Sedation Levels

At Periodontal and Implant Associates, Inc., we offer several dental sedations. Our comprehensive options include four levels, which are local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, oral sedation, or intravenous sedation. The best-suited sedation for you will be associated with the potential intensity of the treatment you are undergoing. Most often, you will be in one of these three sedation type categories:

Mild Sedation

If the primary objective is to relieve your anxiety, then mild sedation is the preferred choice. Mild sedation will decrease your anxiety level, and it will also reduce the level of discomfort associated with the treatment. Often, it eliminates any discomfort or pain completely.

Medium Sedation

If your procedure is more intensive, then a medium sedation is preferred. When you receive medium sedation, you enter a much deeper state of relaxation. Sometimes this sedation can have the ability to induce some mild amnesia. If together we choose this as your sedation option, you will not be driving home following your procedure. It will be necessary to have someone available to take you home.

Heavy Sedation

Some procedures may be conducted better if you are in a deep level of sedation. The simple justification is that anything less would make the procedure exceedingly more difficult from a practical standpoint. This is now referred to as heavy sedation. The overall experience for you is surprisingly similar to a relaxing, deep sleep. You likely will experience amnesia and be unable to recall any events that have occurred during your procedure. It will also be necessary to have someone drive you home.

The Types of Dental Sedation

There are several delivery methods used at Periodontal and Implant Associates, Inc. to provide sedation to you, which include:

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is quite popular and the mildest form of sedation. The administration process includes using a mouthpiece that delivers nitrous oxide and puts you into a relaxed state. Nitrous oxide reduces the anxiety and discomfort associated with the treatment.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is a slightly more intense method of sedation. Oral sedation uses an anxiety medication, placing you into a deep state of calm. This effect can last for several hours even after the procedure is completed. You will not be allowed to drive home following your procedure.

IV Sedation

The most intensive form of sedation dentistry offered by your team at Periodontal and Implant Associates, Inc. is intravenous, or IV Sedation. During this method, you will be put into a state of unconsciousness extremely close to sleep for a longer period of time. You will experience amnesia before and after the treatment. Due to the intensity of the effects of IV sedation, you will not be allowed to drive following your procedure, and you need to plan to have someone available to drive you home.
